Originally, paint ball guns were not designed for the sport; they were used by forestry men (lumberjacks, woodsmen, etc) to mark specific trees from a distance, and by cattle herders to mark their cows. The founders of the sport, Bob Gurnsey and Charles Gaines, wanted to develop a game that allowed them to “recreate the adrenaline rush that came with the thrill of the hunt”. A third friend, Gorge Butler, eventually showed them an agricultural magazine containing a paintball pistol, the Nelspot 007 marker. On June 27th, 1981, these three men and nine other players, each from various aspects of sports, hunting, and entertainment, played the first game of paintball; then called “Survival”. With rules resembling that of capture the flag, except with live guns and safe ammunition, a national interest in the game started to spread.

There are several different variations on the type of paintball game a group decides to play. Some of them are:
- Capture the Flag: A team must retrieve their opposing teams flag from their bunker, or base, and raise the opposing team’s flag in their own base.
- Elimination: A last-man-standing type scenario where for a team or player to win he/she must eliminate the entire opposition.
- Woodsball: A paintball game usually contested under Elimination or Capture the Flag rules, and is played in a very large, wilderness setting. The expansive terrain makes it possible for a longer, more conservative game; as it is impossible to view the entire field at any time.
- Speedball: The antithesis of Woodsball, as it is usually contested in much smaller spaces, on a man-made terrain. With less obstacles and bunkers to hide in, games are much quicker and more action packed.
No matter what variation of paintball is being played, all games must adhere to the universal rule of safety. Paintball masks, paintball goggles, and other paintball armor and paintball equipment specifically designed for safe play must be worn at all times. All paint ball guns and paintball pistols are manufactured to not exceed a certain velocity when fired: about 300 feet per second, or 90m/s.
